In the most
traditional settings, custom dictates that the
Mother of the Bride, (MOB), selects her gown
first. The mother of the Groom, (MOG), then
selects a gown that will compliment the cut,
color and length of the MOB's dress. However,
wedding etiquette today is fast becoming a far
more flexible affair. Play it by ear and
communicate . In the end, you both will look
fabulous!

Generally, it is
best for the MOB and the MOG to stay away from
dresses in the white, ivory, or champagne color
family -- you don't want to appear as if you're
competing with the bride! It is always a good
idea to talk with the bride and ask her feelings
on other colors that have traditionally been
"no-no's" such as black (which suggests
mourning) and red (which can be considered
flamboyant). As long as good taste prevails ,
you're bound to be a vision in whichever color
you select!

Some brides
prefer for the MOB's gown to match the color of
the bridesmaid's dresses, or to otherwise
coordinate. However, some brides don't like the
matching look and there are many stylish and
classy alternatives such as staying in one color
spectrum or choosing complementary shades. What
really matters is that everyone feels
comfortable.

As
soon as the bride has chosen her gown and the
gowns of her attendants, it's your cue to start
your search. If you feel like you need to put it
off (in order to drop a few pounds, for
instance) just be sure to have a decision made a
month before the wedding. Also, be sure to let
the MOG know that she doesn't have to wait for
you, so that she, too, will have enough time to
choose a gown.
